New Accounting Faculty Consortium

Accounting faculty Dr. Lucy Lu and Dr. Anna Johnson recently returned from the “New Faculty Consortium” where they joined new faculty at other institutions to be mentored by veteran faculty.

At the conference, Lu and Johnson learned about research, technology, goal-setting, time management and expectation gaps between accountants and service users. The conference, in Leesburg, Virginia, was a joint effort by the American Accounting Association (AAA) and Ernst & Young, a Big 4 accounting firm.

“I love my family, including my new Bradley family, research and teaching,” Johnson said. “At the conference I learned the importance of keeping a balance between these. It is very important to devote time to being a great teacher. However, I need to make sure that I also schedule time for my other two loves — my family and research.”

The conference included senior faculty presentations, a panel discussion, small group interaction and networking time.

Lu and Johnson plan to implement these new concepts in the classroom and in research.

“I learned about the use of technology in the classroom,” Lu said. “For example, using lecture videos, using case studies in the course, and using LiveScribe pen to make long problem solutions. For research, it is important that we keep writing. Some strategies to cope with time management include writing 20 minutes each day and having classes done in the morning so that you can focus on writing in the afternoon.”
