Learning the Lab

Chemistry major Scott Duda 18 observed systems that keep the public healthy as a summer intern for Peoria Disposal Company.

Duda, of Brookfield, Illinois worked in PDC’s laboratories for the summer. The company, perhaps best known for providing garbage and recycling services to the city, also tests foods for the meatpacking industry and water for municipalities and industries.

During his time at PDC Labs Inc., Duda rotated through three departments. Most of his time was spent in their Chemistry department, where he examined water samples through various testing procedures. Some of these water samples were sent in by Pekin Township to determine the effectiveness of their water treatment systems.

He also worked in the microbiology lab, which was a new experience. In that setting, he assisted lab preparations for projects such as testing beef and pork samples for E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Duda also explored PDC’s organic chemistry, which included experiences testing wastewater from industrial clients like Caterpillar.

“The internship was a great opportunity to see the inner workings of a data production lab,” Duda said. “I was able to see what it’s like to do science that isn’t research-based and build relationships with lab analysts.”

The summer sparked an interest in pursuing environmental care as a career. He also started to think about potential new technologies and chemical processes that could lead to stronger pollution standards.

“I’ve always been interested in environmental care, and after working at an environmental lab, I really appreciated limits the EPA set to keep people and the environment safe,” Duda said.
