Fashion Focus Designs Scarves for Bradley Admissions Staff

In a matter of an afternoon earlier this semester, Bradley’s Fashion Focus club added scarf accents to admissions staff garb. The scarves, complete with the university logo, stood out around campus and gave designers a sense of accomplishment for their work.
Admissions representatives, who don distinct apparel each year, chose scarves this year and then decided to team up with the family and consumer science department. The partnership led to eye-catching accents that stirred campus conversation.
“We are constantly getting questions about the scarves,” said Cory Craig, associate director of admissions. “Everyone wants to know where we got them. It's a great way to talk about the FCS department to prospective students.”
Though the project scope initially seemed daunting, Fashion Focus members made quick work of the scarves.
“I was a little intimidated by the number of scarves we were expected to complete at first, but Fashion Focus members were really able to get together and finish everything in an hour, which was amazing,” said Fashion Focus President Caitlyn Mayhorn.
The day offered those with limited sewing skills a chance to learn from more experienced crafters. By the end, sewing novices picked up enough skills to train other beginners.
“It turned out to be a good project for the students,” said Dr. Kendra Brandes, associate professor of Family and Consumer Sciences. “They turned the session into an opportunity for members and students.”
Beyond the skills refined and learned, students frequently see the fruits of their labor when admissions staffers are out guiding tours.
“Seeing the scarves around campus is a truly great feeling,” said Fashion Focus President Caitlyn Mayhorn. “I’ve seen them on visit days and I get excited to see them each time. Being able to see the results of our work so often has been very rewarding.”
