Teacher Education Mission

The mission of Teacher Education at Bradley University is to prepare teachers who will be effective leaders, advocates, and life-long learners.  We believe that teaching and learning are dynamic, interactive, life-long processes based on empowering interactions among learners.

Teacher Preparation Programs

Bradley University offers 18 baccalaureate programs leading to state teacher certification and one graduate-level certification programs in Educational Administration, Special Education, and School Counseling.

Student Characteristics

Most undergraduates (95 percent) are of traditional college age; 95 percent attend full-time, and 87.8 percent are Illinois residents.  Seventeen percent of all students are minority students.  The average ACT score for the fall 2011 freshmen was 25.1.  Undergraduate enrollment is 4,954.  Graduate enrollment is 685.  Total enrollment is 5,639.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to Teacher Education Program: Candidates must have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall, 2.5 in education courses, and a 2.5 in their content major or concentration.  Candidates must have earned grades of not less than a C in COM 103, ENG 101, and a mathematics course that meets university general education requirements.  They must have completed a prescribed group of education courses for each major with the appropriate GPA and no Ds, passed the Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills, demonstrated appropriate pre-professional behaviors and dispositions, been cleared on a check of criminal history, and received a satisfactory vote of the faculty.

Admission to Student Teaching: Candidates must have maintained a minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall, 2.5 in education courses, and a 2.5 in their content major or concentration.  They must have been advanced to candidacy, passed the Illinois Certification Test in their content area, been cleared on the State Police fingerprint check, and have a negative result on a current TB test.

Accreditation

Bradley University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; the College of Education and Health Sciences is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); and all teacher preparation programs are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education.  Individual teacher preparation programs are accredited by one of the following:  National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Best Practices

  • Practicum experiences in the schools begin the freshman year and continue each year of the program, increasing in responsibility.
  • Each candidate will have clinical experiences in the full range of his or her certification and in a diverse setting.
  • The university has Professional Development School partners at each level from early childhood through high school.

Notable Features and Accomplishments

  • In December, Bradley PDS Partnership funding was renewed by the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee for another three-year term. As the partnership continues into its seventeenth year, three new PDS sites (professional development schools) have been added: Glen Oak Community Learning Center, Harrison Community Learning Center, and Trewyn School. To accommodate expansion from five to eight PDS sites, the Partnership Council is currently in a strategic planning phase with restructuring beginning in August 2012.
  • An early childhood delegation of teachers and professors from South Korea visited our EHS College and our Professional Development Schools Project in November as part of the on-going relationship of the College with Keimyung University.  Also, Dr. Helja Antola Crowe was invited by Keimyung University in November and early December to present at an early childhood forum and at two other universities in Daegu and Seoul.
  • On November 4, 2011, the Illinois Association of Teacher Educators (IATE) hosted its 41st Annual Fall Conference in Bradley University’s Robert H. Michel Student Center.  Representatives from the Illinois State Board of Education presented and President Joanne Glasser introduced the keynote speaker, Mr. Dave Koehler, State Senator for Illinois’ 46th District, who spoke about House and Senate Bills related to Illinois education. The following faculty serve on the IATE Executive Board: Dr. Sherrie Pardieck, President; Dr. Jana Hunzicker, Secretary; and Dr. Patty Nugent, College and University Representative.
  • This academic year, students at Elmwood Junior High School are actively engaged in a Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) project, in collaboration with Dr. Sherrie Pardieck, Dr. David McMullen, and Dr. Dean Cantu, in researching the history and story of the town of Elmwood. The students are involved in gathering primary source information through interviews and archival research, which will result in the production of a video documentary that chronologically traces the history of the community of Elmwood. This project is sponsored by a grant from the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities Teaching with Primary Sources Project, through the Library of Congress.
  • Dr. Dean Cantu, chairperson, has been appointed to the newly formed Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Higher Education Advisory Committee, comprised of representatives from state professional teacher education organizations.  Dr. Cantu will serve as a representative for the Illinois Association for Teacher Education in Private Colleges (IATEPC) on the newly formed ISBE Higher Education Advisory Committee, which held its first meeting on December 19th.
  • This spring semester, Professor Pat Chrosniak, Associate Professor of Teacher Education, is on sabbatical leave at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada where she is working on a research investigation in teacher education.  She has been blogging about the experience.
  • The Department of Teacher Education was notified on March 21, 2012 by the Illinois State Board of Education that the Illinois State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board (SEPLB) has approved all teacher education programs at Bradley University, as follows: Early Childhood Education; Early Childhood/Elementary Education; Elementary Education; English Language Arts; Family and Consumer Sciences; Foreign Language – French, German, and Spanish; Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS I); Mathematics; Music; Science – Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; Social Science – History; and Visual Arts.
  • The new History/Social Studies Teaching program was approved, which is directly aligned with the National Council for the Social Studies Standards.  All of the course and program changes will be implemented in the upcoming fall semester.

This is the official catalog for the 2013-2014 academic year. This catalog serves as a contract between a student and Bradley University. Should changes in a program of study become necessary prior to the next academic year every effort will be made to keep students advised of any such changes via the Dean of the College or Chair of the Department concerned, the Registrar's Office, u.Achieve degree audit system, and the Schedule of Classes. It is the responsibility of each student to be aware of the current program and graduation requirements for particular degree programs.
