Economics is a rigorous and quantitative social science; it provides a scientific method of organizing facts, quantifying and testing hypotheses, and specifying policy alternatives. At the same time, it is a social science, and exposes its majors to the great economic systems past and present. Thus, economics provides a theoretical structure from which to pursue intellectual questions of the highest order. Bradley's Economics-LAS major is designed to provide students with an understanding of:
- economic theory
- quantitative tools for dealing with economic variables
- a specialized understanding of those particular areas of interest in economics
- a broad background in the humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences
Students in the Economics-LAS major are exposed to a wide variety of faculty expertise. In addition to teaching, many instructors consult and are involved in local business development. This practical experience is brought into the classroom. Some of the research interests of Bradley’s Economics faculty include:
- municipal recycling
- the economics of uncertainty
- public sector labor markets
- collective bargaining
- international trade policy
- Federal Reserve behavior
The Economics-LAS major is specifically designed for those students who are planning a career in government, politics, public policy or the law. In addition, this major is excellent preparation for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. in economics when combined with a minor in mathematics.

A major in economics is a stepping stone to careers in business, law, and government. It can also be the first stage to becoming a professional economist. Opportunities for economics majors are numerous and varied, and the options open to them can be quite challenging, exciting, and rewarding.
