BU Theatre 2012 – 2013 Season Performances

The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee

September 20 - 30, 2012
Six young people dream of glory, acceptance, love and parental approval -- all treasures that come along with the winner's trip to Washington DC and the national spelling bee.  The quirky, hilarious, and lovable spellers competing in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee invite you on their angst and joy filled journey of adolescence as they learn about winning, losing, and themselves.  Guest Artist and House Theatre of Chicago Company member Tommy Rapley choreographs this musical by Rachel Sheinkin and William Finn.

Pheladelphia Story

November 8 - 18, 2012
Some say true love comes along just once in a lifetime.  What about second chances when you blow it the first time?  This Broadway hit originally starred Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord (as did the 1940 film with Spencer Tracy and James Cagney).  Philadelphia Story by Phillip Barry lures us into the rarified social world of the Philadelphia Lords.  The very particular socialite divorcee Tracy Lord is about to marry her successful young second chance, when her mother and sister, a tabloid reporter, and her ex-husband bring about a series of events that make Tracy examine herself and her choice.

New Faces 2012

November 30 and December 1, 2012

Join the Department of Theatre Arts for an evening of drama and laughter as our new students showcase their unique talents in an evening of scenes and short plays.

A Raisin In The Sun

February 28 - March 10, 2013

Three generations are pressed together in one apartment.  Times are tight and getting tighter.  Lorraine Hansberry's Pulitzer prize-winning play takes its title from the poem "A Dream Deferred" by Langston Hughes, and draws us into the Younger family's crossroads moment in Chicago's largely African-American Woodlawn neighborhood around 1960.  The hearts and minds of the Youngers are full of bursting with different ideas of and yearnings for what it will take to improve their situation.  Dreams are on the verge of festering.  A long-awaited insurance check is on its way and could change everything.  Will it bring real change?  Raisin eloquently explores the dynamics of family, parenthood, socio-economics, pride, love, ethnicity, and race.  Guest Artist, Bradley alumnus, local theatre artist and television personality Garry Moore directs.

One Third of a Nation

April 11 - 21, 2013

Fire in a tenement.  Corruption in the housing market.  The Little Man struggles for a voice and a better life.  In 1938, Arthur Arent and the Federal Theatre Project created the Living Newspaper production One-Thired of a Nation, the subject of which is startlingly relevant today.  The title springs from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's second inaugural speech, in which he artculates the great challenge of the fact that one third of the nation remained "ill-housed, ill-chad, ill-nursished."  One-Third of a Nation brings to life the rise in slums in America and wrestles with the universal human desire for a decent life.  Guest Artist Sean Graney of the Hypocrites Theatre of Chicago adapts and directs this production.

All performances will be held in the Meyer Jacobs Theatre in the Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts located on the corner of St. James and Elmwood Streets. For more information contact the Cultural Events Box Office at 677-2650 or visit our website at theatre.bradley.edu.
