Honor Society

Awards

  1. Outstanding English Senior - Awarded each spring at LAS Honors Day Program to English senior selected by English faculty for outstanding scholarship and contribution to the department and discipline.
  2. Olive B. White Award - Awarded each spring to outstanding creative writing student selected by the creative writing faculty.
  3. Academy of American Poets Award - Cash award of $100 each spring to winning entry in the American Academy of Poetry contest.
  4. Chester B. Sipple Poetry Award - Cash award of $500 each spring to winning entry in the Cester B. Sipple Poetry contest.

Honor Society

Sigma Tau Delta, International English Honor Society

Purposes

  1. To confer distinction for high achivement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies
  2. To promote interest in literature and the English language on local campuses and their surrounding communitites
  3. To foster the discipline of English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing.

Eligibility

  • Minimum of a B or equivalent average in English
  • Rank in the highest 35% of one's class in general scholarship
  • Completion of at least 3 semesters or 5 quarters of college work

Fees: One-time international initiation fee

Advantages

  • Members receive the Newsletter while they remain active in their local chapter.
  • Members receive and have opportunity to contribute to the award-winning literary publication, The Rectangle.
  • Members are eligible to compete for several $1,750 scholarships and awards.
  • Local chapters sponsor programs such as career nights, cook-outs, and film viewings.

 

The Department is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Kevin Stein to the position of Illinois Poet Laureate.
English majors are encouraged to take the American or English Studies Abroad Program for one or two semesters.
