Clarinet, percussion duo to perform at Dingeldine Music Center

Dialectic Duo, a clarinet and percussion duo based in Phoenix, Arizona, will perform on Sunday, March 8, at 3 p.m. in Dingeldine Music Center, located at 1417 W. Barker Avenue. The recital is free and open to the public.  

The Duo features clarinetist Dana Sloter, a native of Peoria and percussionist Bryan Hummel. Sloter and Hummel earned their undergraduate degrees at Drake University and are now graduate students at Arizona State University, pursuing Master of Music degrees. They play quality chamber works for clarinet and percussion.

Hummel has built a career teaching drumlines, percussion ensembles, and private percussion students, and composing and arranging, having had works performed at national conferences. He was a featured composer/performer at the 2013 Eastern Trombone Workshop with the Drake University Trombone Choir. He has appeared at three Iowa Bandmasters Conferences, first as an arranger in 2011, as a member of the Drake University Wind Symphony in 2012, and as a featured soloist in 2013 alongside mentors Bob Meunier and John Kizilarmut. Hummel competes as a soloist both internationally and locally, having won two concerto competitions and four collegiate showcase competitions. At Arizona State University, he is a drumline instructor for the Sun Devil Marching Band. He is a proud alumnus of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity.

During her time at Drake, Sloter participated in a wide variety of ensembles, including the Drake University Wind Symphony. As a member of this storied ensemble, Sloter appeared at the 2012 College Band Directors National Association North Central conference, at the 2012 Iowa Bandmasters Association conference, and on two compact discs (Windsongs and Mosaic). Sloter was a semi-finalist in the International Clarinet Association’s 2014 Young Artist Competition and a finalist in the 2014 ASU Concert of Soloists competition. She is a member of the Peoria Municipal Band and a dedicated pit musician, having performed in theaters in Peoria, Des Moines, and the Phoenix area on a variety of woodwind and keyboard instruments. She is a Presser Scholar and proud alumna of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. Her teachers include Clarence Padilla, Robert Spring, and Joshua Gardner.
