Inaugural Charley Steiner Symposium on Sports Communication This Week

November 3, 2015

Some of the nation’s biggest names in sports communication will gather at Bradley University for the inaugural Charley Steiner Symposium on Sports Communication November 9 - 12.

The event's namesake, Charley Steiner, LA Dodgers play-by-play announcer, along with Larry King, journalist, radio and television host; Scott Ackerson, Executive Vice President of Fox Sports; Jane Leavy, writer, reporter and author of New York Times bestsellers on Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle; and many other communication professionals will give keynote addresses and lead panel discussions during the event.

The symposium will offer insight into topics and issues in sports and media from experts, who are established professionals and visionary leaders in the industry.

Dr. Stan Liberty, Bradley's Interim President, says Bradley's partnership with Steiner makes the event possible. "We are fortunate to be able to tap Charley’s vast network of industry contacts and friends to assemble such a distinguished group of speakers for this outstanding educational event."

Dr. Paul Gullifor, chair of the Department of Communication, sees this as an incredible opportunity. "Our students are getting rare access to some of the greatest sports communicators in our country." The symposium panels are open to the public and Gullifor expects attendees to include current Bradley students, prospective students, faculty, staff and members of the Greater Peoria community.

Schedule of events and biographies of speakers can be found online.

Bradley announced in January that it would name its nationally renowned Sports Communication program in honor of four-time Emmy Award winner, National Radio Hall of Fame inductee and LA Dodgers play-by-play announcer Charley Steiner, a Bradley alumnus. The Charley Steiner School of Sports Communication, the first named sports communication school in the nation, was dedicated in March.
