Orthopedic residency is the first of its kind in Downstate IL

Bradley’s new Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) orthopedic residency received accreditation through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties this summer.

The experience, offered in conjunction with the Illinois Neurological Institute at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, will fast-track DPT graduates toward board certification.

As licensed physical therapists in the one-year postdoctoral program, participants work as full-time therapists while receiving one-on-one mentoring. Residents also will be involved in teaching opportunities at the hospital and Bradley’s DPT program.

“Our residents will function as excellent resources for clinical education of our doctoral students and OSF receives experts to provide quality health care,” Assistant Professor Joe Kelly said. “Our residency fosters specialized expertise, professional leadership and stewardship to meet the needs of the changing health care environment.”

In addition, residents will be eligible for board certification after the year. The process usually takes two or more years to complete.

Bradley’s orthopedic residency is the first of its kind in Downstate Illinois. Residents will be practicing their craft in the largest medical community outside the Chicago metro area.
