University Launches ‘Trash to Treasure’

April 25, 2016

A new initiative at Bradley aims to reduce, reuse and recycle what students leave behind when they depart campus for the summer. This spring, students and staff are teaming up to reduce waste through a new initiative called Trash to Treasure.

As students move out of residence halls, apartments, and off-campus houses at the end of the school year, Trash to Treasure will collect their unwanted items for donation to local nonprofits. Everything from small items such as clothing and school supplies to large items such as futons and desks are being collected.

Donations will benefit Habitat for Humanity, Peoria Housing Authority, United Way Backpack Project and East Bluff Community Center.

Bins for small-item donations will be placed in residence halls, Student Apartment Complex, Main Street Commons and the Student Center starting April 25. Large-item donations such as furniture may be brought to Markin Performance Court between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. May 4-11.

For those living in St. James Apartments, Trash to Treasure is hosting special on-site drop off days. From 12 to 5 p.m. on May 9 and 13, St. James residents may drop off any items they wish to donate in Parking Lot D, the southeast corner of the apartment complex. Residents may also request at-home assistance for larger items by calling the Trash to Treasure hotline on drop off days.

Trash to Treasure is possible through campus wide collaboration, and more than 100 volunteers. Those spearheading this initiative include Student Activities, the Lewis J. Burger Center for Student Leadership and Public Service, Residential Living, Student Senate, Interfraternity Council, and the campus Sustainability Committee.
