MAP Matters Rally

November 15, 2016

The Bradley University Student Senate hosted a MAP Matters Rally in the Michel Student ballroom. More than 50 students attended to show their support for the MAP program.

As speakers explained, the Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) impacts 1122 Bradley students and a high percentage of recipients come from lower income families and are minorities. For over 50 years, Illinois Governors and the Illinois General Assembly have recognized the great investment MAP is in enabling students with financial need to attend the college of their choice. Illinois private colleges and universities educate 225,00 students which represents more than 50% of those in higher education in Illinois- a population that public institutions in Illinois simply do not have the capacity to serve.

For MAP students at Bradley, the average annual award is $4,413 and the total amount of promised scholarship money for the 2016-2017 academic year is $4,951,710.

Students gave personal testimonies of the critical importance of the MAP program. Without it several students said they wouldn't be able to attend Bradley or any other university.  University President Gary Roberts, State Senator Dave Koehler and Rep. Jehan Gordon Booth also spoke about the importance of the program.

Grants for the previous academic year were just disbursed in July, but no word yet on funding for this year.

Students sign posters to show their support for MAP grants.
