4.04 Backup and Retention Policy.
- UNIX Backup tapes Each evening a full backup is made and transferred daily to Macmillan room 103. The preceding 3 weeks of backup tapes are stored in Macmillan room 103. Each server has another full backup, once per month, stored in Morgan Hall for one year. Retention of electronic mail backup files is referenced in Policy 5.05, Electronic Mail Account Usage.
- The tape library is located in the PBX switch room between Sisson and Burgess Halls. All servers are backed up centrally each night (Sunday through Saturday). Each server has a full backup once per week (on a rotating basis). On other nights, a differential backup is executed. Each night a second copy of the nightly backup is made of the critical systems (Alex, Ben, Jerry, Kramer, Max, Moneta and Reggie). The data resides in two locations, Morgan Hall (on the SAN and Sisson Hall (in the tape library). Retention of electronic mail backup files is referenced in Policy 5.05, Electronic Mail Account Usage.
One older system, Borus, uses Arcserve for backups. These tapes are stored in McMillan on a daily basis, except for the monthly keeper tapes which reside in Morgan Hall. Every Saturday a full file backup tape is produced. These tapes are sent off campus. The off campus site retains weekly tapes for three weeks.
